TOYOTA, GIVE US THE PRADO!

In the 4WD scene, the word ‘Prado’ isn’t usually paired with ‘hardcore adventure’. However, with the release of the 250-series Land Cruiser Prado, that’s most definitely set to change. As some would argue the 300-series bends more toward the luxury, boat-towing market (albeit incredibly capable), the latest Prado lends itself more to modification, customisation, and adventure.

With its body-on-frame design, and only a four-cylinder variant due here in New Zealand, you’ll be pleased to know it’s the torque-heavy four-banger that’s in the current Hilux. Although, coupled with the 48-volt hybrid system, it has a bit more torque. With 150kW and 500Nm from as early as 1600RPM, it’s going to make light work of the 3500kg towing capacity. We’re eager to get behind the wheel of one, as the eight-speed automatic is said to be competent on the road.

Off-road, we’d love to put it to the test too, with the Toyota’s very own Multi-Terrain Select mode ensuring each type of terrain is covered. We’re hoping it doesn’t get in the way of all the fun, but time will tell. There are whispers that OEM-level support will be huge too, with Toyota set to release
five different bullbar options for the front.

The Prado will also feature Toyota’s SDM (Stabiliser Disconnect Mechanism) which will allow greater articulation off road, should it be required. Currently, Toyota are offering pre-sales on the Prado with a GX, VX, VX Limited, and Adventure model priced from $83,990–$104,990.

We’ve now exceeded 70-series money, so what will the uptake be like? Well, if it performs like the 70-series platform, but caters more toward being a family tourer, what’s not to love? We’re looking forward to getting our hands on one, Toyota!
